Company visibility in AI vs Google SEO

SEO helps pages gain visibility in search results. It does not mean that ChatGPT or another AI tool will describe and recommend the company correctly.

A comparison of ranked search results and a company recommendation in an AI answer

A company can invest successfully in SEO for important queries and still be absent from a ChatGPT answer. It may also be recommended by an AI tool even when its own website does not appear among the top Google results.

This is not necessarily an error. SEO covers work that helps search engines discover, understand and show a page to relevant users. AI visibility describes whether a system mentions the company, how it presents it, whether it considers the company relevant to the question and which sources support the answer.

SEO works on the presence of pages in search. AI visibility concerns a company’s role in a generated answer.

01

What does Google SEO involve?

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is work intended to help search engines discover and understand a site while helping relevant users find it through search results. It includes technical accessibility, information structure, content that answers queries and signals that help assess usefulness and credibility.

Google defines SEO as helping search engines understand content and helping users find a site and decide whether to visit it. It does not guarantee the first position. Its outcomes can include improved visibility of particular pages for relevant searches.

In Google Search Console, average position refers to the relative position of the topmost result leading to a page or property. It can be analyzed alongside impressions, clicks and click-through rate. Google defines these metrics as data about links displayed across its search services.

The main unit of observation is a page address. I ask:

  • whether the page appeared for a given query,
  • where its link was positioned,
  • how many times it was shown,
  • how many users clicked it.

These metrics show the outcomes of SEO in Google’s organic results. They do not directly show whether an AI system will consider the company a suitable provider or mention it in a generated answer.

02

What does company visibility in AI mean?

An AI tool does not have to respond with a list of ten links. It can combine information from several sources, compare companies, omit some pages it found and present a synthesis. ChatGPT can automatically search the web and include citations in an answer, as explained in OpenAI’s documentation.

I therefore do not reduce visibility to a single mention. I check several elements separately:

  • presence, meaning whether the company name appears in the answer,
  • relevance, meaning whether the company fits the need described in the question,
  • accuracy, meaning whether its offer, specialization and facts are presented correctly,
  • type of result, meaning whether it is a citation, neutral mention, comparison or recommendation,
  • rationale, meaning why the system selected that company,
  • sources, meaning which pages are cited to support the answer.

A company listed first but described incorrectly does not have valuable visibility. Likewise, a citation to its article does not mean the system recommends its services.

03

Why successful SEO does not guarantee an AI recommendation

A search engine and a system generating an answer perform different tasks. Google selects and orders results for a query. An AI system can break a question into smaller topics, retrieve material, compare information and then compose an answer.

This creates several possible differences.

First, a well-optimized company article may answer an educational query without providing a basis for recommending its author as a service provider. Content visibility is not automatically an assessment of the whole organization’s capability.

Second, AI may build a brand description from an external source, such as a client page, industry directory or partner publication. The company’s own domain does not have to hold the highest position.

Third, the answer depends on the wording of the question, earlier conversation, search mode and tool. A prompt for “AI consulting companies” tests something different from “a partner for transforming software delivery in a Polish healthcare company.”

Fourth, a citation is not a company ranking. Microsoft notes that citation counts in Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance show how often a page was displayed as a source. They do not indicate ranking, authority or the page’s role in a particular answer. Microsoft’s description of the report shows why these concepts should remain separate.

04

Google SEO and AI visibility require separate measurements

An SEO report and an “AI visibility” result answer different questions. One should not replace the other, and they should not be combined without explaining exactly what was measured.

AreaGoogle SEOVisibility in AI answers
Basic unitPage and queryCompany, answer and question
Type of resultLink at a given positionMention, description, citation or recommendation
Main measuresImpressions, position, clicks, CTRPresence, relevance, accuracy, rationale, sources
ContextQuery, country, device, datePrompt, tool, model or mode, web search, date
Common errorTreating a high page ranking as an assessment of the whole companyTreating a mention or citation as a recommendation

The channels overlap. AI tools that use search need to discover accessible content, and practices that support indexing and understanding still matter. It does not follow that moving three positions higher will produce a proportional rise in recommendations.

Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search Console reporting. Links inside those answers can receive impressions, clicks and positions under Google’s rules. These are still link metrics inside the Google ecosystem, not a complete measure of how every AI tool understands and recommends a company.

05

How SEO can support work on AI visibility

Keeping the concepts separate does not make them independent. A system that searches the web must first discover accessible material. A well-prepared site, logical internal links, unambiguous service descriptions and current content can help both search engines and tools retrieving information from the web.

The difference lies in the objective. SEO focuses on page visibility for relevant searches and attracting useful traffic. Work on company visibility in AI additionally checks whether a system understands the brand, associates it with the right services, can substantiate its capabilities and recommends it in the right context.

A company therefore does not need to choose between SEO and AI visibility. It should maintain sound search foundations while separately examining answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Claude and Perplexity. The manual AI visibility audit explains how to check brand presence, description accuracy, recommendation rationale and cited sources.

The practical conclusion is straightforward: SEO results should not be presented as proof of company visibility in AI. A high ranking may help content be discovered, but a recommendation also requires an accurate understanding of the brand and a match with the user’s question.
